Lost in Translation

Day 31 = No Diet Soda
Day 2 = No Ambulance Ride.
Does anyone out there speak Australian?? I was wondering if you could translate this sentence that “Hollywood” Menzies sent me in an email regarding my incident with a car the other day. Here is what he said:
“I hope you’ve come up well after your little bingle.”
Based on context I have come to the conclusion that “bingle” is Aussie translation of getting run over by a car?? I will have to write that one down.
I have observed throughout the course of the season, since we had two Aussies on our team (Hollywood and Rich), that American girls have a soft spot for these types of phrases. I was thinking that maybe if I make up funny names for things girls will like me?
I did not ask for “Hollywood’s” permission to publish this sentence but I figured he would enjoy the fame that it will bring him and he would not mind. Seriously though, thanks for the concern “Hollywood.”
Today was another busy day. I had to get up early and pack, again. Then drove to Mark Olson’s house in Grand Rapids, Michigan for the second time in a month. I start physical therapy here tomorrow……yeeehaw!
I must have hit my head pretty hard when I got run over the other day becasue I spent an hour on the rollers this evening. I was miserable the entire sixty minutes and kept looking at the clock on the wall…………it sort of felt like I was back in high school!
The last two days have been accident free, well, for the most part. I did clock my head on the hanging light in our living room last night and could not help but laugh. Talk to you tomorrow……………

My new ride………….the “plow”cycle.
Day 30 = No Diet Soda
Wow, this morning I got out of bed and almost feel to the floor I was soo sore!! I was planning on trying to get out for a ride but I couldn’t. Instead, I hobbled around running errands all day and eating mega amounts of tylenol and ibprofen!
I finally went to the Crate and Barrel store after wondering what it was for the past few months. It is full of house stuff and I had fun testing out their beds and couches. Wow, a nice bed is spectacular!
After that I went to Tom Schuler’s house to pick up my new bike. Well, it is a used bike and technically is not mine. Tom is letting me borrow his old Saturn Titanium Lemond for the next month or so until I get my new racing bike. You can now call me “Plow” or at least that is what the name sticker says on the bike. Thanks Tom “the plow” Schuler!! I wonder if the bike will be able to handle my skills??
Tomorrow I am off to Michigan for physical therapy! I hope the PT is ready becuase I am a rather beat up piece of machinery that needs some work!
It’s movie time…………………..

Hit and Run

Sorry about the wheel Tom………..I will include a little piece of fork when I return it!
My poor saddle………I think I actually had it adjusted right today!
My bike is dead.
Day 29 = No Diet Soda
This morning I fell victim to a hit and run. It was my second ambulance ride this fall and hopefully my last. I got up and out for a ride early today and due to the weather (rain again) Frank opted to go to the gym instead of riding with me.
I was having a rather enjoyable ride and my saddle was even comfortable! I was feeling goooooood! I was on my way home rocking to my ipod and all of a sudden baaaam! I got run over by a green car. The dude/dudette turned left right into me and I flew over the hood and woke up in the street. I got hit hard enought that it knocked me out of my shoe!! There were all kinds of witnesses around and everyone was great! Sorry I don’t know who any of you are but thanks. Apparently, the driver that hit my kept on driving but luckily the people on the street got his license plate number.
I did feel really important though becuase I shut down the mainstreet in downtown Milwaukee! I was in the road and there were several police cars, an ambulance, a fire engine and someone directing traffic! All just for me :-)
Once again I had the privilege or being hauled away in an ambulance on a back board with my head taped down. The ambulance people were really nice and they calmed me down because I was freaking about my back. My toes were tingley because it was cold and I kept thinking it was because I was in the process of being paralyzed!
I got some x-rays at the hospital and everything came out negative which was a great relief. Everything was good except for some contusions to my left hip and knee and a headache. I am sore now, especially on the left side but that should go away eventually.
What can I say??? I got really lucky. Getting hit by a car without a helmet on only nine weeks after breaking my back and walking away with only a broken bike and some bruises. I do feel lucky because it could have been worse but what have I done to warrant this shitty stretch of events??? I guess bad stuff happens in bunches. I think I am about done with the bad and am going to have a great season…………actually I know I am!
I want to take a minute and say thanks to Frank and Becca. Frank is awesome! I know I rip on him a lot in my blog but it purely is just for fun. Both times I have been at the hospital he has been there to help me out. Thanks and I am sorry but this time you don’t get to change my clothes for me.
Becca is also awesome :-) She is always there to talk to me when things are shitty and is soo supportive all the time. Plus, she is usually the first person I call because her cell number is the only number I can remember which I think says a lot! Thanks Bec (the tootbrush is great).
I think my mom and dad probably both hate cycling now but hey, I am good and will be out there tomorrow. The only difference will be that I am not going to be on the Felt because it is dead.

Rippin’ Pipp

Day 28 = No Diet Soda.
I made it back to ‘Tosa this afternoon and had the privilege of riding with Pipp in the rain. Compared to yesterday when I wore the “Everest climbing” gear to ride, today, I had to swithch to the rain gear. I swear the past week I have rode in everything: wind, snow, ice, cold, and rain. The only two things I have not had to deal with are sun and warmth!! Most importantly I have not rode the trainer :-)
It was sort of funny I was telling Frank on the way out that I had some good legs today and felt really good. Then we turned around and I realized we had a tailwind on the way out. D’oh!
It is great to see that things are back to normal at home………..after the ride Frank ate a chocolate chip brownie while I had a orange and protein shake. (Cough)….fatty…..(cough)! Aside from that I am trying to get Frank to let me use his WAC gym membership when he goes out of town next week. He said it would be fine but when they swipe the membership card a picture comes up. I told him no problem all I have to do is look really ugly!!
I wanted to say thanks to Lucas and Jamie for letting me stay at their appartment. Just for warning though your neighbor thinks that you guys are assholes!! When I was there I was going down to the basement to do abs, with my elastic bands, when the new neighbor asked if I could help her carry a bookshelf up the stairs. I said no because I still can’t lift anything and went on my way. I forgot that I did not have my neck brace on and therefore I did not bother to explain why I could not help her. Then she saw me doing abs in the basement with these elastic bands and gave me a rather nasty look. Sorry new neighbor lady and sorry Lucas and Jamie!
Time for abs………………I think I am getting a six-pack…………..if I look in the right lighting.

PS. This is my 100th post…………how am I doing? Any suggestions?
PPS. Lucas and Jamie feel free to eat that open can of refried beans I left in your fridge. Just scrape the dry crust off the top and the rest is good. Don’t worry about it either…..my treat!

Slipping and Sliding

Caught in the snow again but this time no cross bike. It was so cold I did not even make a saddle adjustment becasue I did not want to take off my mittens. Oh and look closely at the new shorts!

Slippery Road. Stopping distance on road bike = two miles!
Car accident on the belt line.

Day 26 = No Diet Soda
Holy “crumb cake” today’s ride was sketchy! It was cold out once again so I had to bust out the “Everest climbing gear” in order to get my two and half hours in. I ended up wearing four layers of clothing: thermal base layer, long sleve jersey, thermal cycling jacket, and North Face parka. I also had tights, leg warmers, cycling shorts, several pairs of socks, two pairs of booties, three pairs of mittens, a neck gaitor, hat, and shades. I am not shitting you either!! I took thirty five minutes just to get ready to ride…………that was tiring itself!
Ten minutes into the ride it started to snow and it accumlated rather quickly. At first it was pretty fun busting through the snow knowing I was the only cyclist out but then it got slippery. I almost went down a handful of times………….manhole covers and railroad tracks are slippery when it snows! I even motorpaced behind a snowplow for a bit but I did not feel too safe since my stopping distance was about two miles when I would get up to speed!!
I made it back in one peice but had frozen toes again. I really don’t mind when my toes freeze……….the pain actually feels sort of good! I am not sure why? My feet really don’t do anything when I ride so it is not necessary to have feeling in them anyway. Frostbite would not be good because I enjoy having ten toes but I think I would have to run barefoot in the snow for ten miles before that happens.
Wearing all those clothes got me thinking…………a company like Mountain Hardware should sponsor a team. They could supply all of the clothing with the condition that all of the riders live and train in cold climates such as Wisconsin, Montana, North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan, etc. It would be interesting to see how the team would do in the early season races?? Maybe I was just thinking about that because I want a new Mountain Hardware jacket……….oh well, it is still a good idea.
I wonder if Frank has been training?
