Longs Peak
Uncategorized October 25th, 2007This morning was a rough one since I had to get up at 4:33 AM. That allowed me just enough time to pack, eat breakfast, make some sandwiches, and be at Franks house for our 5:30 AM Longs Peak departure time. Actually, I was about fifteen minutes late since I had to make Frank some damn sandwiches again…and then he yelled at me for being late! WTF?
Anyway, if you already don’t know Frank, Randy (aka Sandy (inside joke)) and I made a late season attempt to summit Longs Peak today and unfortunately we came up a few hundred feet short. A bit frustrating but I guess the important this is we all made it back home this evening.
The hike looked a little like this…
Leaving Boulder at 5:45 AM…Frank had to drive my Jeep so I could eat my breakfast which I would have had time for if I was not making him frickin’ sandwiches in the morning!
After a quick, cold, dark shit in the woods we left the Longs Peak Trailhead at 6:45 AM.
Like all responsible hikers should do we signed in at the trailhead log book.
Then we were on our was as the sun started to come up.
The view of Longs Peak (middle) once we got above the timberline.
Further up the trail here is Randy and I posing in Front of Chasm Lake with Longs in the background.
Further up past Chasm Land and after making our way through “The Boulder Field” we made it to “The Key Hole” which is where the climb became rather technical mainly due to the snow.
After making it past “The Key Hole” comes a section called “The Ledges.” I think under normal circumstances this section would not be that bad however, the hard icy snow definitely through a spanner in the works. Here is Frank and Randy traversing “The Ledges.”
After successfully making it through “The Ledges” comes “The Trough” which is a thousand foot wall that took us from 13,000 ft to almost 14,000 ft. I did not take any pictures here because I was breaking a trail through the snow and was more worried about not dying! Here is Frank happy he is still alive.
Me at the top of “The Trough” and at the entrance of a section called “The Narrows.” Here is where Randy…ummm I meant Sandy started to get pulmonary edema due to the elevation so to make him feel better I tried to make it look like I was breathing hard
The view from the top of “The Trough.” Yep…that is our feet dangling off the side of the mountain!
After “The Trough” is a narrow section ironically called “The Narrows.” Once through “The Narrows” it is not far to the summit…only about 300 vertical feet. However, due to the snow and ice “The Narrows” simply were not safe and to avoid plummeting thousands of feet to our death we turned around. Definitely a bummer but I believe it was good judgement and plus, there will always be next time!
On the way down I spotted some furry high altitude thing…I wonder what its hematocrit is?
Finally, back to the safety of “The Boulder Field” and from there is was smooth sailing back to the trailhead where the Jeep was awaiting us.
Basically, today’s hike/trail run was an 8 hour failure but hey it was a good workout and now we know what to expect the next time we attempt to summit.
Time to go soak my blistered feet!
later, g.

i felt like i hiked a peak today, had to go up to the friggen second floor. Its crazy how different my life is since i quit cycling. I can walk into public places with out paparazzi following me, people dont know me, i just am not a big deal anymore, i had to sell everything i had cuz i just cant afford it anymore. I cant find anything else that bores me more than a 6 hour ride, this sucks, i cant believe i quit, its like I am nothing anymore and the world doesnt revolve around me. I cant walk down to front desks of hotels and bitch at them about the air conditioner and explain to them who i am and how many races i won, and explain to them that if they dont fix it I will write about my experience on my blog and all those bikers chosing between sleeping in their subarus or staying at the Hampton will have an easy choice. its like i am a nobody, i dont even own the road anymore, or tables at coffee shops. I have to buy socks! and pay full price for gatorade at the 7/11, how lame is that, dont they know me? I mean, i RACED in the tour of california, doesnt that mean anything? I just paid 5 bucks for a bike box from the local shop, they dare charge me? i just handed him a 5 dollar bill and my trading card from 06 on health net and said, yeah, i was a big deal for a couple months, people knew me.

An early Happy Birthday to you. Have a super party!

Jones? Mike… Jones?… I’m sorry, doesn’t ring a bell… Geez, I’m sorry, this is a bit embarrassing. Just can’t quite place the name. You say you “raced” on a pretty big club, did you? Did you ever finish the whole Tour dee Tucson? Hmm…
October 30th, 2007 at 6:09 pm
you mean el tour? yes, i did finish it, although i am sure Suzanne Sonye beat me everytime, i mean, thats ok, cuz she is good, but i mean, she is a girl. Oh maybe you mean the tucson bicycle classic, and that as a matter of fact, i won, although, and as gord fraser informed me directly after as i returned his wheels “i heard you won, because the field got neutralized and Ill have you know that i won it with also winnning all three stages, how many stages did you win?”, so i guess i didnt win that either. but yeah, the el tour de tucson, i am actually thinking about making a comeback in 09 and starting at the tour, that way i can get some respect on the mean streets of tucson and people will recognize me and ill get a big contract, and then, as a wiseman named “cando” says, go back to banging my head against the wall.
October 30th, 2007 at 8:50 pm
Hey NoPro Jones,
Did you ever forward that message to “cando” about his old swim pal in Alameda? Patrick is recovered and doing well now, so if you ever talk to “cando” please let him know. Thanx!

You win El Tour, and I guarantee you won’t be paying $5 for bike boxes! At least not in Tucson…in the fall. And it would be yet another incredible, inspirational cycling story–disillusioned, down-and-out, washed up (just embellishing here), retired cyclist comes out of retirement and self-imposed isolation to win the greatest cycling event ever. Do you have any personal demons you can conquer along the way too? You would definitely “be somebody” again.

Hey Garrett, happy (early) birthday! Unfortunately I can’t make it Friday night; my mom’s coming into town for the weekend.
Are you going to any of the cross stuff this weekend? I’m dragging my mom, so maybe I’ll see you there
Oh, and we should still try to get together for a ride sometime!
See ya!

Jones first of all.. the groupies that are hanging out at my pad (because I am a pro) think you are hysterical and thank God you are not pro now as I could be in danger of their departure and imminient move to Binghamton and I cannot afford to lose my groupies.. Yes I get free socks and enough free bike boxes to keep all my groupies happy. We have started a petition in Boulder to RETURN JONES TO CYCLING IN 09 or is it to Elect Obama.. I forget.. I am easily confused now that I am 26…. and the ADD of course
The next thing I need to know is Who is Officer Naughty’s East Coast Pal?
