Boulder Group Ride
Uncategorized March 16th, 2008Did the Boulder group ride this weekend and it was awesome! I got up late, was rushed, it was crazy cold, Frank yelled at me for being late, and there were several crashes!
The start of the group ride at the Boulder Fun Park parking lot.
It is actually not a group ride but a race…and competitors come with high octane drinks such the liquid “Air Head” Beverage found here!
Rolling out of town…pre-carnage!
Is that a broken Health Net Maxxis wheel…whose could that be?
Frank was very happy after his crash. I bet if he had an Easton wheel, like the Bissell Pro Cycling Team rides, it would not have broken and he would not have crashed! Frank is tough (not like me tough though…probably about one fifteenth of me tough if I were to quantify it) and was okay.
The group on the way back into town.
Happy Birthday to Ivan Stevic who turned 28 this past Wednesday…he was also on the ride.
The last crash of the day involved my roommate Jonny Clarke* He cracked his head and needed to get some staples in it. Luckily he is also okay…but apparently hitting his head must have gave him gas…god damn!
Post group ride refreshments…thanks Chris B. for buying me a coffee and cookie.
The lesson learned here is be careful on group rides and wear armor if you have to!
later, g.
* Karl Menzies moved out of the Boulder house after being my roommate for the past three plus years. Apparently, his girlfriend could better fulfill his needs than me! Anyway, it was sad to see him go but I think I have left him with the skills to find his way on his own!

So who won? Judging from the pre-ride shot, I would have put my money on the guy in the Pro Peloton kit from 1999 but I know TUP and Vitamin Cottage had the numbers.
Just curious, was Clarke wearing a helmet when he cracked his head? It’s a shame if he wasn’t. I’m pretty sure you actually get them for free when you turn pro. They work well are actually pretty good at preventing the need for noggin staples.

As much as I appreciate a picture of Johnny Clarke’s head, I’d prefer a picture of the staples.

Mmmmm cookies from Spruce…I live about a block from there, I don’t think it’s good for my diet to live within walking distance of Spruce AND Amantes…

Although big time pro’s may get helmets for free, it would be incredibly un-cool to wear one. If a helmet is worn on a group ride of 110, it may severely limit the pro’s chances of getting laid following a night of drinks and douchebaggery at 7 euro bar.

Jeez Tommy what is with all the anger? First off, we are not big time pro’s we are merely doing what we love for a living.
Secondly, I am not going to comment on any individuals behalf but wearing or not wearing a helmet is a personal decision which I respect. It is too easy to sit back and tell people what is right or wrong! However, with that being said I always ride with a helmet…it actually is a Bissell team policy and if we get caught w/o one we slapped with a nice fine for the team!
Third, if all that we are out riding for is to be cool…does the big furry neck gaitor that I wore to the start of the ride cool? I definitely did not get me laid!
Lastly and on a more positive note, I love the use of the word douchebaggery…going to have to add that to the vocabulary!
Thanks for the comment unfortunately I can not agree with everyones opinion.

hey what time is that ride..i wanna go

Totally agree about personal choice. No judging.
Just saying…It’s always a shame when someone decks it…
More so when the the words “head” and “staples” are involved…
Even more if a helmet could have prevented an injury.
It’s sad, but whenever I hear about a head cracking, the first question I ask is “was he/she wearing a helmet?” It’s a reflex at this point.
My bad, I was really more curious about who won the ride.

I was surfing the missingsaddle blogs and saw my comment.
That wasn’t me but I will now comment:
Wearing a helmet or not is a choice. Things like this should make the pros and cons a little more clear. Furthermore anyone that does that ride without helmet prolly doesn’t have anything to protect but Johhny gets a one time pass since he is new to town. Then again one of his teammates hit the floor just a few weeks earlier on the same ride so…..

HAHAHA this was funny G! I agree with Dan re helmet, the social costs of crashing without a helmet are very high and the costs of putting on a helmet are very low. So I think you should wear one. Duh.
